5 Types Of Engineering You Should Know About

If you are not an engineer you may mistakenly believe that all engineering is one and the same and that there is just one type of engineering. If this is true, I must disappoint you and tell you that you could not be more mistaken. There are in fact numerous types of engineering, and some of them we will discuss today in order to make it easier for you to understand this discipline.
What Is Engineering?
As it has been mentioned in the text, engineering is a scientific discipline, but it is also art and profession. Engineering applies scientific theory to design, develop and analyze technological solutions, or in other words it’s how you make stuff.

What Types Of Engineering Are There?

There are numerous types of engineering, as well as numerous sub disciplines and interdisciplinary subjects which can be further derived from various combinations of major engineering branches.

What Are Major Engineering Branches?
When it comes to major engineering branches, there are five basic and major branches of engineering and those are the following: chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and geological engineering. Other types of engineering either belong to one of these five major branches, or are a discipline derived from them or derived from a combination of these major engineering branches. We spoke to the experts at Stephen’s Gaskets, manufacturers of shim washers, to find out about the different types of engineering.

Five Important Types Of Engineering
1. Computer Engineering
Computer engineering is actually a sub discipline of electrical engineering, which studies and applies electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. You are probably already familiar with the term computer engineering, as it is one of the most wanted branches of study and the most desired career. Furthermore, people who do computer engineering can specialize in software engineering, hardware engineering or network engineering.
2. Aerospace Engineering
Aerospace engineering uses different branches of engineering such as electrical engineering and mechanical engineering in order to be able to apply these principles to aerospace systems, such are aircraft and spacecraft, as well as to design, develop and sustain ground control systems. Aeronautics and astronautics are branches of aerospace engineering.

3. Mechatronics Engineering
Another type of engineering that uses mechanical and electrical engineering is mechanics engineering which is intended to examine the design of automation systems, and which includes robotics, instrumentation engineering, optomechatronics engineering, bio-mechatronics engineering, as well as avionics engineering, which is a lot similar to aerospace engineering, and deals with the design of electronics and systems on board an aircraft or spacecraft.

4. Energy Engineering
Energy engineering is a broad field of engineering which deals with energy efficiency, energy services, facility management as well as alternative energy technologies. Energy engineers develop and study solar engineering and wind engineering.
5. Agricultural Engineering
Agricultural engineering applies engineering principles to agricultural fields, machinery, biological material processes, bio energy, farm structures and agricultural natural resources.

The following are branches of agricultural engineering: aquaculture engineering, biomechanical engineering, bioprocess engineering, biotechnical engineering, food engineering, forest engineering, health and safety engineering, as well as many other.
